Growing up as a high school athlete and raised in the beautiful state of Maine, I naturally developed a love for all things outdoors like camping, skiing, hiking, boating, traveling and exploring mountains, oceans and lakes. I have always loved health and physical activity, especially out in nature!
In the fall of 2020, something happened that dramatically changed my life and that of my whole family. I remember sitting at my desk at work and my stepfather called. He said that he was at the ER with my mother and that she had broken her arm. I thought, ok, that's manageable. Then several hours later, when he called to give me an update, I'll never forget his words, he said, "Your mother has cancer."
The cancer would turn out to be incurable multiple myeloma, the same cancer her mother had. So what did this mean for me?
During this time the COVID pandemic was really exploding, making it difficult to navigate my mother's trauma surgery and cancer diagnosis. In my own personal life, while many people were on lockdown, working remote or worse, losing their jobs, I still had to physically go to work everyday in a healthcare setting while also supporting two teenage boys at home as a single parent.
For months, I lived in a very dark, unhealthy place. Stressed out with work, trying to care for my mother, raising children at home due to remote schooling, and just simply not being able to be active and enjoy life. I was consuming too much alcohol, not exercising, eating horribly, gaining weight, and feeling very much alone. As the end of 2020 approached and people felt more safe to do activities outside, I began to venture back out into nature. But it didn't feel like enough and I needed to challenge myself. So I began to plan, what are 3 activities outside that I have never done before that I can do in 2021 and start to make a change in my life?
Want to know what was on my list? Rock climbing, surfing and white water rafting! In January of 2021, I reached out to my now mentor and friend on Instagram. He is a professional rock climbing guide and IIN health coach in Maine with over 20 years of experience. We started planning a rock climbing day in the spring and then our conversations transitioned into health coaching. Little did I know that both of these experiences would become my passion!
We actually started ice climbing that winter and transitioned to rock on a rare, warm, beautiful day in March. I also did five months of personal health coaching as his client. We worked at such deep levels that through his coaching, it helped me to step out of my suffocating pocket of fear that I was going to end up with the same cancer as my mother and grandmother. I finally started living a healthy and nourishing lifestyle.
It was truly TRANSFORMATIVE!
Since then, I have climbed in spectacular places such as Red Rocks Canyon NV, The Gunks NY, Squamish BC, Red River Gorge KY, Newfoundland CA, and various amazing places in NH and my home state of Maine. I hope to bring rock climbing and other outdoor retreats to you, my clients.
I was so inspired and profoundly impacted by the benefits I received from my health coaching sessions, that in October of 2022 I signed up to become one myself. I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) health coaching program. For the next year, I dove deep into the program and graduated with my INHC certification in October of 2023. And here I am today, ready to help women find their healthiest authentic self and release their inner woman warrior. Are you ready to take the leap and Elevate Your Health? Let's start today!
